What do archaeologists do in labs?

I consider myself lucky to be working in an archaeology lab. This experience is truly fascinating as it gives me the chance to delve into various facets of archaeological research. Our work involves the analysis of artifacts and materials retrieved from the Winnipeg Junction archaeological site.

To start our work, we always clean and sort the artifacts. Using brushes, water, and other tools, we remove dirt and debris from the objects. Afterward, we organize them according to their type and material. This method provides us with a better understanding of the objects discovered at the site.

Our next step is to carefully analyze each artifact to determine its purpose, place of origin, and age. To accomplish this, we utilize a technique called typology which involves categorizing objects based on their physical attributes.

We ultimately compile all the discovered artifacts into a database for future use. This process is a gratifying experience as it highlights the extensive amount of work involved in analyzing the collected artifacts before any conclusions can be drawn.
